In The Longrun, Nothing Matters

I went to work today and before I could drink my soon to be cold cup of coffee Kelly greeted my day with the premise that it was going to be a bad day. Kelly and Jessica started their day two hours before me and already had a plate full of customer issues that made this Friday feel like another Monday. Just then the telephone rang and as Kelly greeted another irate customer she glanced towards me with the look that this call is for me, the manager. As the call was placed on hold Kelly warned me that Mrs. Munson was angry because the handle on the door my company installed was loose. As I greeted Mrs. Munson on the phone I was advised in a stern tone about how she spent good money on this product and installation and basically ordered me to fix the problem. As Mrs. Munson continued to conduct verbal flatulence in my direction my mind started to wander. I no longer was able to even hear the angry vibrations emanating from the phone.

I started to ponder that my County needed a new courthouse as the one in use was too old and small. Then in a flash my mind traveled to the issue that the entire State of Florida was experiencing a budget crisis and there were to be cuts in essential services such as fire and police. I started to wonder how I was going to be safe in such troubled times. I was afraid for the safety of my family.

In a brief interlude of my thoughts I heard Mrs. Munson continuing her verbal assault and mutter something about how incompetent my organization was, in her opinion. Just then my mind's eye raced forward to the borders of this great nation of America. I began to worry about how insecure our borders really were. I pondered the possibility that terrorists or maybe even Pablo, the migrant worker, may have on the well being of this great nation. Then I began to think about the growing military threat of China and how they are launching anti-satellite weapons. Oh my gosh! I was now worried about the safety of my family from a foreign nation attacking us. I also started to worry about how all those nasty greenhouse gases were allegedly destroying my planet. I began to worry even more about the fact that China does not worry greenhouse gas anything as they tear up our economy and planet.

Mrs. Munson was still ranting about how her loose handle caused a scratch on the door and that she either wanted a new door or to be compensated for the damage.

My mind then wandered off to the fact that I heard there may be a meteor hurtling its way through space to its final destination of an impact that will destroy good old Mother Earth. The fear was growing in my throat as the demise of Earth was sealed with the realization that in a mere five billion years our sun will implode and wipe out our existence greenhouse gases or not. Others even have warned that when the solar system is gone we will all be extinct and there really is not much we can do to prevent it. Heck, even if the sun does not implode there is even the theory that the universe will collapse upon itself and that in a moment .it really will not matter whether her door handle was ever loose.

As I returned to the cinderblock walled office I responded to Mrs. Munson something about how sorry I was about her loose door handle. I swallowed my desire to tell her to kiss part of my anatomy and promised her I would take care of all her issues right away. I swore to her my allegiance to her well being and begged her not to spend her future green gods at another company.

I hung up the phone, looked at Kelly and smiled. I took a sip of my coffee and decided that I really did not care about her door. Just then at that moment it dawned on me that none of this really matters when one ponders the vastness of the universe. At that moment I realized that we are boxed in by what we consider to be "our" reality when the actual reality is so much larger than what we perceive. As I travel through my days I try to not get wrapped up in meaningless nonsense of what is considered important.

When I look up into the stars on a clear dark night I am grounded with the fact that in the vastness of time and space worrying about Mrs. Munson's loose thing on her door is ultimately not worth the act of stressing out my body. With the realization of the significance of my very miniscule existence, I must then ask the question as to why I then let my coffee get cold each and every day when at work?
